Chinese Herbal Therapy
On certain occasions and with your full compliance your acupuncturist may want to prescribe an herbal formula to complement the acupuncture treatments they are administering to you or as a stand alone treatment for your condition. These herbal formulas were created from ancient herbal information that was gathered, compiled, formulated, tested, and handed down from generation to generation. Today, practitioners of oriental medicine continue to prescribe herbal formulas because...they work.
Chinese herbal medicine can help you get better faster, and strengthen, support, or tonify the body. These formulas have the capacity to address the underlying cause of various medical conditions, whether acute or chronic. The reason being they go deeper into the body, energetically speaking, than acupuncture alone.
In order to create a formula, the herbs are used in different quantities and for different purposes based on their energetic qualities, functions, tastes, and the different organs and meridians they address. Luckily, there is a rich and deep collection of classical formulas that are still effective on today's patients making modifications almost unnecessary.
Formulas can be prescribed in a number of ways:
- Raw herbs that are boiled into a tea (this is the most potent form to administer them)
- Liquid extracts
Because the formulas make use of whole plant parts rather than a concentrated form of the active medicinal ingredient (which is what pharmaceuticals are) there are little to no side effects. The formulas are considered safe to administer to everyone even children.
